The Liebster Award

Sometimes blogging can be an incredibly lonely venture. I often wonder if anyone is reading, if anyone cares, and other nonsensical writer thoughts. So it helps when, out of the blue, a reader (hi mom, love you!) contacts me or leaves a comment sharing that something I’ve said resonated with him or her, or when a fellow blogger reaches out to me with a nod of encouragement. The latter is exactly what happened recently when Cebi Baker contacted me to let me know she’d like to nominate me for the Liebster Award. Continue reading “The Liebster Award”

Musings of a First Time Solo Traveler

I recently traveled to Miami, by myself, and on assignment for a piece about seeing the Magic City local style. I then proceeded to get lost inside multiple parking garages, spilled curry sauce all over myself in a nice restaurant, and came to terms with the fact I am a grown woman who considers herself a foodie yet doesn’t know how to properly hold and use chopsticks.

As someone who has long been fascinated by female solo travel, I was disappointed it wasn’t coming naturally to me. I called my sister more than once exclaiming that I was an epic failure at solo travel, but regardless of my mishaps I did emerge from the experience with a greater appreciation of travel, and of myself.

Read on for my mishaps and lessons learned along the way. Continue reading “Musings of a First Time Solo Traveler”

Steph’s Taco Blog: Pepe’s Cantina in Winter Park

Ah, Winter Park. While I still have certain reservations about the area (everything is expensive, the vibe can be a little snooty) I have to admit it’s growing on me. And when you step off Park Ave. there are some real gems to be found in this foodie-friendly neighborhood north of Orlando.

One of those gems, Pepe’s Cantina, was recommended to me by my friend Arlene (who is also an Orlando blogger – check her site out) after she saw I was starting up a taco series. We decided to meet up there for lunch and, you know, “research.” Tacos: the great connectors. Continue reading “Steph’s Taco Blog: Pepe’s Cantina in Winter Park”

Day Trip Guide: St. Augustine, FL

Since moving to Central Florida in 2012, day trips have sort of become my jam. Living in a state where people regularly come for their yearly vacations means an endless supply of things to do, and I’m making a commitment to explore more this year and in the future. Day trip guides feature locations accessible in 2.5 hours or less that are small enough to be enjoyed in just one day.

St. Augustine, FL

The Basics

St. Augustine, located on the East coast south of Jacksonville, is the oldest city in the United States. Ornate buildings, narrow cobbled streets, and rich history can be found at every turn and there are numerous attractions to visit.

You could easily spend a week in St. Augustine visiting every attraction, but if you’re visiting for the day (still totally worth it!) you’ll want to do some prior planning and choose just a few activities. I recommend arriving early (8:30-9:00am) as many of the attractions are closed by 5pm. Plan for a 2 hour drive (each way) from Orlando. Continue reading “Day Trip Guide: St. Augustine, FL”
